Programming for Kids

Yes, you are reading it right! Now, kids can also program. There are so many programming tools/languages that kids can learn and showcase their creativity. In this process, they also learn thinking out of box, come up with creative solutions to the problems and present their own ideas in a beautiful manner and they can even create their own stories/animations :-) or may develop own games!

Would you like to give an opportunity for your kids? Then read!

Scratch is the one of the most famous programming language among kids. MIT has just released Scratch 3.0 version today, which allows projects to be viewed even on mobile. Some schools are even offering Scratch as part of their Digital curriculum.

It's very intuitive, kids can learn easily on their own, they can view the projects done by others, they can add share their projects with others or add them to a studio and request for feedback from fellow programmers!

It's colorful, interesting and thought provoking tool.

It's available offline as well and can be used on tabs and laptops! You can register using a parent email id and create an account to save and share projects.

Scratch is also available in multiple languages!

CodeCombat : As their headline on their home page of website says: The most engaging way to learn real code! Yes, kids play games and solve the simple to complex game level, in turn they learn the programming! What a fun! There are tracks for Game development and Web development.

Code.org is the first step for the kids to give a try in programming world! There have been 25 million projects created by their students till today! This site offers wide variety of choices for kids to kick-start into programming and go to complex levels by solving the problems in a simple way! Kids can choose their level of programming based on their study (Elementary/Middle/High school!) and go on from there!

KhanAcademy offers Hour of Code program in different tracks such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS and SQL. Recommended age is also mentioned for each track. You need internet connection to learn the lessons as they are online. I loved the concept of Database track and it was really good.

Arduino offers robot programming for kids and I loved this as they even offer integration with Scratch! If you kids love robots, micro-controller or sensors and LEDs with programming, then you must give him/her the chance to give a try! There are numerous Arduino start-up kids, which an be ordered and tried to start with!
